Get the Materials
You will need a construction adhesive (e.g. UniBond One For All), 2 plywood boards, 2 plywood strips, jigsaw, two hinges, a trunk lock, a metal ruler, sandpaper, a cloth, a brush, a sponge, wood varnish and a cartridge gun.
Mark the dimensions and cut the pieces
With a pencil mark out the following dimensions on the board:
Piece A (Base): 420x700x18 mm
Piece B x 4 (Legs): 18x34x420mm
Piece C x 2 (Longer part of structure): 140x438x16 mm
Piece D x 2 (Shorter part of structure): 140x452x16mm
Piece E (Top): 140x452x16 mm
With the jigsaw, cut the board along the shapes you have drawn on the previous step.
Sand and clean the surface
Smoothen the wood with sandpaper and clean the area to be glued with a moistened cloth.
Apply the product
Apply a bead of construction adhesive (e.g. UniBond One For All) in a linear way on all four sides of piece A. Then, do the same to the short side of both pieces C.
Assemble the structure
Stick together both pieces of C to A. And then immediately stick together pieces C/ A to both pieces of D.
Glue the legs
To stabilize the structure, glue the legs. Apply the construction adhesive on the bottom of all 4 pieces B and place them on the four corners. Do not apply any adhesive on the top!
Assemble the top
Once all pieces have been glued together, remove any excess of adhesive with a damp cloth. Either clamp the pieces together before you start applying the remaining pieces or leave the structure to dry for 12 hours. For piece E, apply hinges using a screwdriver in order to open and close the trunk. Then, repeat the process for the trunk lock.
Apply wood varnish
Using a sponge, apply wood varnish uniformly to the exterior of the whole trunk. Use the brush to give the exterior of the trunk a faded effect until you’ve achieved the look you want.
When the varnish dries, you can store in your new wooden trunk everything you don’t want hanging around the house, making your room the neatest possible! After learning how to make a wooden chest, check how you can apply a nice liner inside your trunk to make it even more perfect!
