Books often clutter our shelves, leaving little space for other objects. The answer is simple: learn how to put up a floating shelf. It’s really easy to make, and it will definitely be a talking point among curious guests!

WHAT YOU NEED

MATERIALS

- A construction adhesive (e.g UniBond One For All)
- A book
- 2 wide metal brackets

TOOLS

- Cutter knife
- Cartridge gun
- Metal ruler
- Pencil
- Cloth

Get the materials

You will need a construction adhesive (e.g UniBond One For All), 1 book, 2 wide metal brackets, a cutter, pencil, metal ruler, cartridge gun and cloth.

STEP 1

Preparation of the wall

Please ensure that the wall you will be sticking the floating bookshelf on is rigid enough and free of dust, grease and any other loose materials.

STEP 2

Mark the book

Open the book on the last page and position the metal shelf brackets on each side (leave at least 20mm space from the edge of the book). Mark the outline of the bracket.

STEP 3

Cut the book pages

Using the cutter, cut the pages so that the metal bracket are hidden inside.

STEP 4

Cut the book front cover

Mark the position on the front cover so the brackets stay straight. Cut into the front cover so that the L shape bracket is able to sit flush against the wall.

STEP 5

Glue the bracket

Apply construction adhesive (e.g UniBond One For All) to the bottom of the hole you have made in the book. To guarantee a good adhesion, also apply construction adhesive to the side of the hole. Stick the metal plates in the holes where you have just applied the adhesive.

STEP 6

Glue the pages

Now apply construction adhesive on the inside of the back cover and also to the base of the bracket. Press firmly. Wait 12 hours to dry. You earned a well-deserved break after learning how to put up a floating shelf!

STEP 7

Hang the shelf

Apply construction adhesive to the back of the metal brackets. Be sure that you apply the adhesive in vertical stripes. Stick it to the wall and press firmly, until the adhesive is visible from the side of the bracket.

STEP 8

Add books

Wait 24 hours to dry before putting on any more books. Please only place up to  4-5 medium sized books on top. Everyone will be very impressed with your floating bookshelf! Be sure to only offer your magician skills to those that are worthy!
